Our Story

Steamtown Church started as a Youth Ministry with the mission of giving every child repeated opportunities to hear and see the Gospel of Jesus. While attending college, our founding pastors, Dennis D’Augostine and Peter Fox dreamed of planting a church in the city of Scranton. God opened doors shortly after college life in 2005 to purchase the former Boys and Girls Club in West Side Scranton. Out of that facility hundreds of teenagers and children had the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Though very successful in Youth Ministry, they both eventually realized to fully impact the city of Scranton, the parents of students needed to hear and see the gospel as well.  Breaking a downward cycle and changing a city’s culture can only occur when whole families are being reached. That’s when the college dream became a reality, and the mission expanded to giving every man, woman, and child repeated opportunities to hear and see the Gospel.

Steamtown Church held its first official Sunday Gathering on March 3, 2008 at the Red Carpet Inn located in downtown Scranton. God was good through the 5 years at the Red Carpet Inn by using the church to share His truth to many who were added to the congregation. He continued to show His goodness by paving the way for the church to purchase a permanent facility (our current home) at 1511 Pittston Ave. in South Scranton (the former St. John’s the Evangelist Parish). Steamtown held its first Sunday service there on June 2, 2013.

Since moving into our current building we have recognized a growing Hispanic population in our neighborhood. In June of 2016 we hired a Spanish-speaking pastor, Marcelo Castro, and added a Spanish service at 1pm on Sundays. We have been extremely blessed that God brought him to us.

Through the years, the church has held true to its original mission. Though many things have been added (namely, the incredible people), the focus and mission have stayed the same and our plan is to ensure that it always will.
